Senator Tom Daschle
United States Senate
509 Hart Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Daschle,
I urge you to support the proposed amendment to the U.S.
Constitution defending the definition of marriage and the institution of the
family. It is my understanding that a vote may soon occur on what has become
popularly known as the Federal Marriage Amendment (S.J. Res. 30), which defines
marriage as between one man and one woman.
As you well know, there is much activity across the
country, with a primary focus in the legal system, to radically alter the
definition of marriage. Marriage, although regulated by civil and church laws,
did not originate from either the church or state, but from God. Therefore,
neither the church nor the state can alter the definition or structure of
marriage. A growing movement favors making those relationships commonly called
same-sex unions the legal equivalent of marriage. This challenging situation
calls all men and women without distinction to become active and defend the
truth about marriage and family.
I sincerely ask you to fight any filibuster or other
activity in the Senate whose goal is to try and defeat this important piece of
legislation. It is crucial that with your assistance, the Senate have the
opportunity to vote and ultimately pass this proposed amendment.
Marriage, as we know and defend it, is a basic human and
social institution to be cherished and protected. No single state or court must
be allowed to redefine or decide this vital issue for South Dakota or the entire
country. This is why a Federal Marriage Amendment, confirming the identity of
marriage as part of our Constitution, is so important. This will no doubt be a
tough battle, but for the sake of generations of children and families,
protecting the identity of marriage is a struggle we need to win.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
/s/
