ACTION ALERT

July 15, 2004

As you may know, this week, after having the matter brought to his attention by a letter from Bishop Carlson (link below), the Governor made the decision to pull the teen section of the State Library Website due to the offensive links provided for youth to access.  Included were links to Planned Parenthood, a website by another pro-abortion supporter, the Kaiser Foundation, and a link to a website entitled ?Go Ask Alice,? websites that, among other things, encourage the use of condoms and birth control, and advise on how to obtain it without parental knowledge.  They have sex games and interactive sex talk chat rooms, and go into explicit explanation on how to carry out sexual acts.  There are discussions on sexual orientation and gay and lesbian advocacy.  Emergency contraception, a drug that can abort a child, is pushed as a virtue.  Chastity and abstinence are not advocated, and rarely mentioned in any detail.

A detailed article on this matter will appear in the August edition of the Bishop's Bulletin.  You can also read the Argus Leader coverage at the following links.  These articles have appeared on the front page, above the fold, every day this week:

Bishop's letter to Governor Rounds:  http://www.argusleader.com/sidebar/Mondayarticle1.shtml

What the Argus articles fail to cover is the struggle Marilyn Mendenhall of Holy Trinity Parish in Huron, SD, and Huron Middle School Librarian, went through to get to this point, or any serious discussion about how harmful the information on these websites is.  Of all the people objecting to the Governor's action, none have come out and said that the information pulled is good for our youth - or something that every teen (really every child of any age) should have easy access to, only that it is censorship and abuse of executive power on the part of the Governor.

We ask that you call or email Governor Rounds and thank him for standing up and protecting our youth from these offensive links.  You can access his webmail by clicking here:  http://www.state.sd.us/governor/inlet/forms/RequestForm.asp.  His phone number is:  605-773-3212.

Please pass this action alert on through your networks.

FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT UP FOR VOTE

Today the institution of marriage is under grave attack.  There is a movement to radically alter the definition of marriage to include same sex “civil unions” or “domestic partnerships.”

As faithful citizens, we are all called to become involved in state and national efforts to defend marriage as a sacramental union between one man and one woman.  Marriage is the cornerstone of the family and of society.  Even though civil and church laws regulate marriage, it did not originate from either the church or state, but from God.  No church, state, or nation can alter the basic meaning and structure of marriage.

Sometime during the week beginning July 12, 2004, our United States Senators will be voting on whether to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment (S.J. Res. 30).  This legislation is an amendment to the United States Constitution defining marriage in our country to be the union of one man and one woman.

Join Bishop Robert J. Carlson in urging our Senators to follow the will of their constituents and preserve marriage in our country!  Click on "National" in the menu above for contact information, or simply click here.

Following is an email passed on to our office from Sam Brownback's prayer warrior:

21 May 2004

Dear Praying Friends of Sam Brownback,

Sam will introduce a bill today called the "Unborn Child Pain Reduction
Act".  This bill to be submitted to both houses of congress requires
that after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the mother who is requesting an
abortion be informed of the fetal pain that will occur with the
procedure and offer anesthesia for the fetus before the baby is torn
apart by the abortion procedure.

This bill is gruesome in that it forces us to think about the pain and
suffering that the fetus has to go through before it is killed.  It
brings a new sense of reality to the whole abortion procedure.  The
partial birth abortion trials have brought the reality of the trauma of
this procedure to the fetus into the light.  This bill is an appropriate
next step in the fight against abortion as a whole.

Pray that the media would pick up on this bill and give a fair
presentation to the public.

26 Senators have signed on as cosponsors so far.  Pray that God would
move the hearts of many more senators and congressman to sign on and
give support.

Ask the Lord to use this as a step forward in helping people grasp the
realities of the abortion procedure and to move public opinion away from
it support for abortion.

Thanks for praying,
Lonnie
