ACTION ALERT
Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls
On Friday,
February 15, 2008,
SB 88, an act to
require abortion facilities to offer
sonograms to pregnant women under certain
circumstances, will be heard in
House Health and Human Services at
7:45 a.m.
Recall that this
bill would require an abortionist to offer a
woman seeking an abortion the "opportunity
to view a sonogram of her unborn child". It
does not require the woman to view it, just
that the abortionist offer it to her. In
addition, the bill requires that the
abortionist file a report of "the number of
females who availed themselves of the
opportunity to view a sonogram of her unborn
child..., and the number who did not; and of
each of those numbers, the number who, to
the best of the reporting physician's
information and belief, went on to obtain
the abortion."
In the past, Planned
Parenthood has stated that sonograms are
routinely done prior to an abortion to
determine the gestational age of
the child in the womb. However, what is
not clear is whether the mother is given
the choice to actually view the image.
Various reports show that when mothers
see their child via sonograms, they are
much more likely to choose life. This
bill helps ensure that this opportunity
is available to all women seeking
an abortion in our State.
It is believed that this
bill will pass out of committee, so please
contact all the Representatives
(so that we can cover the committee members,
as well as the full House members, as things
move very quickly these last weeks of
session) and urge them to
SUPPORT
this bill. (AUTOMATED
WEBMAIL)
Thanks!

ACTION ALERT
This morning
House Local Government removed HB
1151 from the table and passed
it out of committee. Recall that this bill
is an act to regulate the location and hours
of operation of adult oriented businesses.
Because tomorrow is
"cross-over day" (when all the bills must
pass the house of origin), we expect the
House to vote on
HB 1151 during session TOMORROW. Therefore,
please try to contact the members of the
House of Representatives today or tomorrow
morning and urge them to
SUPPORT
this bill. (The House typically convenes at
2:00 p.m., but may convene earlier
tomorrow if they have a heavy calendar.)
Thank you for all your
efforts this session. Only a couple more
weeks to go!

On Thursday,
February 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., House
Local Government is scheduled
to hear
HB 1151, which is an
act to regulate the location and hours of
operation of adult oriented businesses.
This is an attempt to provide more
protection against an industry that is
growing, and destroying marriages, families,
and lives at an astounding rate.
Please read the text of
the bill for more information, by clicking
on the link above. And for an excellent
overview of the harms to our society, along

(If I were to include
the language of the bill or more discussion
on this issue in the text of my
email, it would end up filtered or in your
SPAM folder due to the subject matter
involved.)
Then please contact the
following committee members and urge them to
SUPPORT
this bill:
And, I have forgotten to
add in my recent emails - please pass this
email on through your networks! May these
weeks of Lent deepen your faith and bring
you closer to our Lord.

ACTION ALERT
On Monday,
February 4, 2008, it is
expected that
SB 164 will be heard
in Senate
Health and Human Services at
10:00 a.m., and that it will likely pass out
of this committee as many of the committee
members have signed on as co-sponsors of the
bill.
This bill would make
terrible public policy, and states, among
other things, that: "It is the public
policy of this state that the interest in
freedom from unreasonable government
intrusions into the private lives of
citizens, and specifically the right of
consenting individuals to obtain and use
safe and effective methods of contraception
without interference by governmental
entities, shall be safeguarded and that the
laws of this state shall be interpreted and
construed to recognize and protect these
rights."
Please
"Talking Points" on this bill. In addition,
Jane Hinrichs, a reporter for the Pierre
newspaper, The Capitol Journal, has
also written an excellent article on this
bill. CLICK
HERE to read it.
As you can see, SB
164 could have profound
ramifications for our state. Therefore,
please contact all
the Senators and urge them to
OPPOSE
this bill. Again, this can easily be done
using the
AUTOMATED WEBMAIL
feature on the LRC website.
If it is possible,
please try to contact them either today or
tomorrow before they go home for a three day
weekend and attend cracker barrels. Planned
Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups
will be visiting the Capitol tomorrow and
will be lobbying the Senators to pass this
bill. So they need to hear from people
opposed to the bill as soon as possible.
Listening to
Testimony

would like to listen to testimony online,
look for this symbol at the end of any event
listing, and click on it:

feeds are available for each committee and
House and Senate hearings, and you can also

have concluded. Most computers come
equipped with an audio program that allows
you to listen via the Internet. However, if
you have difficulty accessing the LRC audio
links,

I use, so I know it works!)

Issued:
January 19, 2008
On Wednesday,
January 23rd, 2008,
Senate Bill 88 is
scheduled for committee hearing in Senate
Health and Human Services.
This bill would require an abortionist to
offer a woman seeking an abortion
the "opportunity to view a sonogram of her
unborn child". It does not require the
woman to view it, just that the abortionist
offer it to her.
In addition, the bill
requires that the abortionist file a report
of "the number of females who availed
themselves of the opportunity to view a
sonogram of her unborn child..., and the
number who did not; and of each of those
numbers, the number who, to the best of the
reporting physician's information and
belief, went on to obtain the abortion."
In the past, Planned
Parenthood has stated that sonograms are
routinely done prior to an abortion to
determine the gestational age of the child
in the womb. However, what is not clear is
whether the mother is given the choice to
actually view the image. Various reports
show that when mothers see their child via
sonograms, they are much more likely to
choose life. This bill helps ensure that
this opportunity is available to all women
seeking an abortion in our State.
Remember, you can
quickly do this using the
AUTOMATED WEBMAIL feature.
Simply choose the first Senator from the
drop-down list, type in your email, send it,
and then hit the back button to send your
message to the next Senator on the list.
Unfortunately, last year
a similar sonogram bill died in
this committee. Therefore, it is likely to
be voted down again this year, and the full
Senate will have to force the bill out of
committee. This is called a "smokeout". With
a vote of one-third of the Senate members,
the Senate body can have the committee
deliver the bill to the Senate floor for
debate and vote by the entire body.
Therefore, please also
contact your Senator (and all the other
Senators if you have time) and ask him or
her to support
SB 88 and do what is
necessary to get this bill passed out of the
Senate this year.
Thank you for your
efforts to help build a culture of life in
our State.
